Choose A Color Scheme
This used to be one of the most difficult tasks for me. I never know what I like until I see it and I’ve never been all that successful at creating schemes I like. For this blog, I decided to rely on a simple interior design principal:
Choose 4 colors that go well together. Design your page to use 60% of one color, 30% of another and 5% of the other two, plus some level of black and white. If you can’t come up with the 4 colors, you have several alternatives:
- Browse through color collections at an online paint store. The Voice Of Color site hosted by Pittsburgh Paints is an excellent place to start.
- Find a web site that’s appealing to you and use I Like Your Colors to generate a starting palette for inspiration.
- Try using a color design tool like ColorSchemer Studio.
Finalize The Typography
Chances are pretty good that you’ll be happy with the default typography settings in your chosen theme since that’s probably one of the style elements that played into your decision. However, it’s possible that the default fonts aren’t as readable or as visually appealing now that you have your colors set. If you’re using a theme like Suffusion, styling your text will be trivial. Otherwise, you might have to revert to modifying the CSS — but that should be a simple matter of changing a few styles and type sizes.
